Puncturevine aka Goathead

By Mike Ryan

Characteristics

Puncturevine is a low growing invasive annual that is quite attractive, until you or your pet step on the seed of this plant. Yellow flowers appear mid-summer, with the “goathead”, spiny seed development soon to follow.

This is an annual, so control can be accomplished by pulling the plant while it is flowering. If you pull it out after this, make sure that the seeds are still attached to the plant.

2,4-D herbicide will also kill the plant.
